LEGO Smart Play System Revealed: Smart Brick Debuts with Star Wars in March 2026
The LEGO Group has officially unveiled its next major innovation: the LEGO Smart Play system. Revealed at CES, Smart Play introduces a new way to blend physical LEGO building with responsive, screen-free technology — and it will debut through three new LEGO Star Wars sets launching on 1 March 2026.
Powered by the all-new LEGO Smart Brick, the Smart Play system brings sound, light, motion sensing, and spatial awareness directly into standard LEGO builds. While the brick looks nearly identical to a traditional 2×4 element, it contains advanced sensors, a custom processing chip smaller than a LEGO stud, and a miniature speaker — all designed to remain invisible during play.
Pre-orders for the first Smart Play sets open on 9 January 2026, with LEGO Star Wars acting as the launch partner for the new platform.
What Is LEGO Smart Play?
LEGO Smart Play is built around three core components working together:
- LEGO Smart Brick — a standard-sized LEGO brick containing sensors, accelerometers, colour and sound detection, LED lighting, a speaker, and a custom ASIC chip.
- LEGO Smart Minifigures — visually identical to standard minifigures but embedded with a unique digital ID.
- LEGO Smart Tags — small, studless tiles that trigger specific sounds, actions, or behaviours when detected by a Smart Brick.
Unlike previous tech-driven LEGO products, Smart Play does not rely on screens, apps, or hubs during play. Instead, Smart Bricks communicate with each other wirelessly via a decentralised system known as BrickNet, allowing builds to recognise proximity, orientation, and interaction in real time.
LEGO has been clear that the goal is not to replace traditional LEGO play, but to enhance storytelling through invisible technology, keeping the building experience fully compatible with the existing LEGO system.
New LEGO Star Wars Smart Play Sets – Launching 1 March 2026
The Smart Play system will debut through three so-called “All-In-One” LEGO Star Wars sets, each including a Smart Brick, Smart Minifigures, and Smart Tags.
- 75421 Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter
- £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99 | 473 pieces
The smallest and most affordable Smart Play set features Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced alongside a Rebel outpost and Imperial fueling station. Interactive features bring the twin ion engines to life through sound and light, triggered by movement and placement. The set includes a SMART Darth Vader minifigure and serves as the entry point into the new system.
- 75423 Luke’s Red Five X-wing
- £79.99 / $99.99 / €89.99 | 584 pieces
Luke’s Red Five X-wing expands Smart Play functionality with engine sounds, laser effects, refuelling audio, and repair interactions. The set includes an Imperial turret, transporter, and command centre, all capable of triggering Smart Play responses. It contains one Smart Brick, two Smart Minifigures, and five Smart Tags, offering deeper interactive storytelling.
- 75427 Throne Room Duel & A-wing
- £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99 | 962 pieces
The flagship Smart Play set recreates the Emperor’s Throne Room, echoing the play style of the classic 7257 Ultimate Lightsaber Duel. Three Smart Minifigures — Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Emperor Palpatine — trigger contextual sounds including lightsaber hums, dialogue cues, and even the Imperial March. An included A-wing adds engine audio and flight effects, making this the most immersive Smart Play experience at launch.
Beyond Star Wars: Pokémon and Animal Crossing Rumours
While LEGO Star Wars is launching the Smart Play system, industry rumours suggest the technology may soon expand into other themes. Sources indicate that upcoming LEGO Pokémon sets could utilise Smart Play features to add responsive character interactions, while LEGO’s Animal Crossing range is also rumoured to explore Smart Brick integration for ambient sounds and village-style play.
Final Thoughts
LEGO Smart Play introduces a bold new chapter for the LEGO system, blending advanced technology with classic, screen-free play. Launching in March 2026 through three LEGO Star Wars sets, the Smart Brick has the potential to reshape how LEGO tells stories through sound, motion, and interaction.
Whether Smart Play becomes a cornerstone of future LEGO themes — including rumoured Pokémon and Animal Crossing sets — remains to be seen. But as a first step, this Star Wars debut positions Smart Play as one of the most intriguing LEGO innovations in years.
