80110 LEGO Lunar New Year Display | The LEGO Chinese New Year sub theme with a great track record! Image

80110 LEGO Lunar New Year Display. The LEGO Chinese New Year sub theme with a great track record. A celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar, the Luna New Year is a massive celebration for millions of people around the world. Not only is it the most important holiday in China, it is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and also countries with a large overseas Chinese population.

As a relatively new LEGO® series, the Chinese Traditional Festivals sets are currently in their fifth year, appealing to a wide audience as LEGO aim to continue to capture imaginations as a global brand celebrating different cultures. Always released on Christmas Day in the UK, the sets prove popular with a range of fans hoping to acquire one within their short shelf life.

Set Details

One of the collections released for 2023 is the 872-piece set 80110, Lunar New Year Display. Aimed at builders aged 8 + it involves two individual display pieces which are bright and eye catching. The first is in the traditional Yuan Bao design with buildable golden ingots, koi fish and red pockets, symbolising good luck, good wishes and fortune. The second includes a fantastic pink peony flower, plus the “Hua Kai Fu Gui” greeting, meaning blooming prosperity and happiness.

Each model measures over 21 cm high, 21 cm wide and 8 cm deep, making a great display piece if the sets are built. These sets are also great collector’s item

Theme Analysis

We looked at this sub-theme previously when we reviewed (80109) Lunar New year Ice Festival (click here to read). Of the 11 sets to date, 8 have already retired having had an average shelf life of just 8 months (and none longer than a year!)

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
80102 Dragon Dance 31/12/2019 $80 $199 149% 21%
80103 Dragon Boat Race 31/12/2019 $50 $58 16% 3%
80104 Lion Dance 31/12/2020 $80 $120 50% 12%
80107 Spring Lantern Festival 31/12/2021 $120 $133 11% 4%

Comparable Set Analysis

More specifically we looked closer at the 2 Chinese New Year sets which have annualised growths of 16% and 29% since retiring, underpinning our belief that other sets in this genre will also perform well post retirement.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
80101 Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner 31/12/2019 $119 $198 66% 11%
80105 Chinese New Year Temple Fair 31/12/2020 $120 $151 26% 6%

Conclusion

Another great looking set from a successful theme and very successful sub-theme based on previously retired sets. Short shelf life will also help post retirement value making this a decent medium to long term investment even at RRP.

You just need to choose whether you prefer this or the Lunar New Year Parade (80111), or if you can stretch to buy both!
