Investment Potential

A newish sub-theme with little track record and a visually great looking set but will it make a great investment? One thing stands out initially which deters us is the very high price per piece at 22p a piece. This is exceptionally high compared to the vast majority of LEGO sets and makes it very hard to argue that the set is great value as a base to invest in.

That said, the set is currently available at a 42% discount £75 at Amazon / Argos and we would be looking to this as the base price we would be looking to purchase at if the numbers do stack up.

5th Year Value $0

Theme Analysis

The LEGO City theme in general returns 8% annualised growth which is solid without being exceptional but there are relatively few blockbuster sets with stellar returns compared to many of the other themes.

Retired sets include LEGO CITY Space Center (3368) which has more than doubled in value from £50 RRP to £114 since retiring in 2013 (9% annualised growth) and LEGO City High Speed Passenger Train (60051) which has delivered 6% annualised growth since retiring in 2018.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
3368 Space Centre 31/12/2013 $70 $147 110% 7%
60051 High-speed Passenger Train 31/07/2018 $150 $220 47% 6%
60052 Cargo Train 31/07/2018 $200 $324 62% 8%
60216 Downtown Fire Brigade 31/12/2021 $100 $112 12% 4%

Comparable Set Analysis

A new sub-theme and the initial signs aren’t overly promising! Sets only started retiring in 2022 and most in December that year, and several of the sets have lost value since retirement. Whilst we think

it is too early to write the sub theme off completely it is certainly one we won’t be looking to recommend investments from until the historical data improves drastically.

LEGO City Stuntz Stunt Show Arena (60295) retired with an RRP of £90 and is currently valued £20 lower at £70 and LEGO Stuntz Stunt Show Truck (60294) retired with an RP of £55 and is now valued at £48.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
60293 Stunt Park 31/12/2022 $40 $26 -35% -22%
60294 Stunt Show Truck 31/12/2022 $70 $51 -27% -17%
60295 Stunt Show Arena 31/12/2022 $100 $80 -20% -12%
60340 The Blade Stunt Challenge 31/12/2022 $35 $18 -49% -31%

Conclusion

A solid if unspectacular theme and a new sub-theme with some very disappointing initial performance of the recently retired sets, coupled with the very high price per piece leads us to avoiding this as an investment. Even the hefty 40%+ discounts currently available at Amazon aren’t enough to outweigh the considerable risks from an investment standpoint, but we are going to pick up a set to build at these prices!
